Morning mist over the plots at Wild Living, seen from above

Bandipur, Karnataka

Wild Living

Thirty-six acres of managed farmland where the fields end and Bandipur's forest begins.

The road turns red before you get there.

Past Gundlupete the fields thin out and the hills come closer. The last few kilometres run along the edge of the national park, and then the tar ends. You will know you have arrived when the earth turns the colour of clay.Past Gundlupete the hills come closer and the tar ends. You have arrived when the earth turns the colour of clay.

The Land

Mornings here begin in the mist.

On winter mornings the mist comes in before dawn and settles over the fields, and the old trees stand in it like shadows. On winter mornings the mist settles over the fields and the old trees stand in it like shadows.

It lifts slowly as the sun climbs, and the hills come back one by one: Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta about twenty kilometres away, smaller ridges closing the horizon on the other sides. Nothing here was cleared to make a view. The views were already there. It lifts as the sun climbs and the hills come back one by one. Nothing was cleared to make a view. The views were already there.

The Wild

You are the guest here.

The forest is three kilometres away, but the forest does not read maps. Spotted deer cross the plots most mornings. Elephants pass through. Peacocks call from the trees. The beds run in neat lines across the fields, and at harvest the bulbs dry in the farmyards. The crop links village to forest, supporting livelihoods alongside the region's wildlife. The beds run in neat lines across the fields, and at harvest the bulbs dry in the farmyards.
